TSA NPO is helping bridge the gap between state sector volunteering and career advancement, ensuring that doctors get paid work and support as they build their logbooks and gain valuable experience.
Additionally, the TSA NPO offers tax relief for donors through Section 18A, enablingindividuals and organizations to receive tax deductions for their contributions.
This enhances the sustainability of the NPO’s initiatives and encourages more donations to support doctors working in the state sector.

A simple, unique process
How It Works
Are you a specialist surgeon who occasionally finds yourself in need of a GP or MO to assist you in the operating theater when your regular assistant is unavailable? Perhaps you require an assistant but hesitate to approach someone new due to uncertainty about their surgical capabilities.
As a GP or MO, you may have a keen interest in participating in surgical procedures, but the challenge lies in being asked to assist on a theater schedule.
That’s where Surgical Assistant comes in. We offer a comprehensive platform where GPs/MOs can register their availability to provide assistance in the theater. Surgeons can then utilise our services to connect with vetted GPs/MOs who are ready to lend their support in the operating theater.
Surgical Assistant acts as a convenient one-stop solution for surgeons, ensuring they can find qualified theater assistants within a reasonable timeframe, regardless of the time of day.
We understand the importance of timely and reliable assistance in the surgical setting, and our platform is designed to meet those needs effectively.

Le Roux Viljoen
Orthopedic MO

Le Roux completed medical school in 2015, followed by internship and community service. Afterward, he spent three years working abroad on cruise ships.
During this time, the onset of Covid-19 led to an unexpected career shift. Le Roux transitioned into project management, overseeing the outfitting of a new cruise ship at the Fincantieri Shipyard. This role involved team management, budgeting, acquisitions, and planning—skills that piqued his interest in a completely new field.
Upon returning to South Africa in 2021, Le Roux set his sights on specialising in orthopaedics, only to realise how competitive and challenging the field can be. When things don’t go as planned, adaptation is key, and that’s exactly what Le Roux did.
While assisting in private practice, he saw an opportunity, which led to the founding of TSA (The Surgical Assistant). Initially a last-minute solution for slate cover, TSA has now evolved into a comprehensive platform that offers services such as elective slate bookings, skill upgrades for surgical assistants, and training opportunities for those pursuing specialisations.
With primaries, intermediates, and research experience under his belt, Le Roux is taking a unique, yet determined path toward becoming an orthopaedic surgeon.
AD Schoeman
Co-Founder & Marketing

Marketing, Partnerships & Strategy
Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, now living in Cape Town (but still loyal to the 043), AD is the engine behind The Surgical Assistant’s business development, marketing, and national growth.
After graduating from Stellenbosch University, his love for people and systems led him into the world of treasury outsourcing, where he joined a global industry leader. Today, outside of TSA, he works at a boutique advisory firm in Stellenbosch, building scalable, human-first solutions across multiple sectors.
Though not a doctor himself, AD is married to one—a paediatric registrar—which, in his words, gives him “partial rights to a medical opinion.”
For him, TSA is more than just logistics—it’s about people.
It’s about building a platform where healthcare professionals connect, learn, and grow together.
The 2024 launch of the TSA Academy brought that vision full circle: a place to not just find work, but to become great at your work. A place where mentorship, exam prep, and upskilling are accessible to any doctor, anywhere.
When he’s not solving healthcare problems or planning national expansion, you’ll find him travelling after the Springboks or with a beer around the braai—talking business, rugby, or both.
